Set within the vicinity of Gillman Barracks - the home to Playeum’s Children’s Centre for Creativity - is the Southern Ridges, Labrador Nature Reserve and Hort Park. These natural and beautiful man-made environments present an excellent opportunity to explore some of the missing links between nature and art making. Playeum’s hands-on exhibition, ‘Hideaways - Creating with Nature’, addresses this proximity directly by inviting children and their families to experience and reflect upon the natural worlds of insects and other flora and fauna in new ways and contexts. Six significant new commissions have been realised by the participating Singapore-based artists and collectives. Created by Bartholomew Ting, Richard Kearns, Madhvi Subrahmanian, Isabelle Desjeux and associates, Shogun Creatives and The People’s Atelier, these installations directly engage and respond to the contemporary reality of this local environment. Within their chosen genre, each artist has produced an interpretive hands-on interactive experience within each installation, offering unique insights and ways for children and adults to engage with natural materials. Through the panel of Playeum’s participating artists, these short case studies will address the roles that hands-on installations play in triggering interactive creative responses in children and adults. How effective are low-tech interactive exhibits in contributing to creativity? What makes a successful hands-on exhibit? And how do artists' values and artistic thinking shape interactive and intergenerational play? These questions and more will be addressed through a series of presentations and lively discussion.
