SynopsisLunar New Year is an important event in the Chinese calendar. It is a time of reunions and feasting on festive dishes with family and friends. During this joyful season, homes are thoroughly spring-cleaned and couplets written in beautiful calligraphy adorn the doorways. In this special workshop, hear from academic Dr Tan Chee Lay about the fascinating history of Chinese calligraphy. Joining him are calligraphy practitioners Malik Mazlan and Fathiah A'bdussamad , who will be sharing the similarities and differences between Chinese and Arabic calligraphy. Participants can also try their hand at writing in both calligraphy styles! Limited spaces available. Enjoy a special discount if you come with your friend/parent or grandparent. Limited spaces available with safe management measures in place.Biography of SpeakersMalik MazlanMalik Mazlan is a Singaporean Malay calligrapher whose interest in Chinese calligraphy has brought him throughout Asia from Tokyo to Beijing. As a young Chinese calligrapher, it had always been an aspiration for him to use the skills and insights he had obtained from Chinese calligraphy and arts to reflect a multicultural society.Nur Fathiah A'bdussamad Nur Fathiah A'bdussamad is a calligrapher trained under the tutelage of Hasanain Mokhtar, a national master calligrapher of Egypt in various scripts. She then learnt the Moroccan script from master calligrapher Bel'aid Hamidi, a former royal calligrapher of Morocco. She has been teaching Arabic calligraphy and traditional art since 2014. She is currently learning Arabic calligraphy in Chinese style under the tutelage of Haji Nordeen Hoca from China. She has trained more than 200 students in Arabic Calligraphy.Dr Tan Chee Lay One of the most highly-acclaimed writers of his generation, scholar-writer Tan Chee Lay works as Associate Professor at the National Institute of Education in the day, and writes Chinese creative writing, calligraphy and paints in the night.A founding member of Poetry Festival Singapore and a judge of the Cultural Medallion and SEA Write Award, he was conferred the Young Artist Award, Singapore Youth Award and Golden Point Award.
