Coming from the word kisha (記者) meaning reporter, these press clubs of a select association of news organizations have exclusive contact with press centres in institutions such as the Prime Minister's Official Residence, government ministries, local authorities, the police, and corporate bodies.Globally the media landscape is rapidly evolving, leaving old media models struggling from a lack of subscriptions. Their last resort to survival is left in the hands of advertisers, as well as access journalism built upon privileged contacts with authorities and the government. Once dubbed the fourth power in democracy, mass media faces the challenge of maintaining their status quo as a watchdog of democracy. As our first keynote event for 2021, Social Innovation Japan is excited to welcome Unfiltered.coop to discuss their vision for the future of media in Japan. Created by a group of journalists and readers committed to the values of solidarity and mutual respect, this media organization provides an innovative model to redirect power to the people. With democracy at the heart of the organization, ownership is placed directly into the hands of the primary users of the business’ products and services.  With a mission to shed light on the stories that are often filtered out by mainstream media or even, at times, reporters themselves, Unfiltered is committed to an ethical framework that reflects its members’ lifelong dedication to social justice through news stories, workshops and community building.Agenda:11:30 am - 11:35 am:  Welcome11:35 am - 11:50 am: Introduction to Cooperatives11:50 am - 12:05 pm: Building Unfiltered - A Media Cooperative12:05 am - 12:25 pm: Q&A12.25 am - 12.30 pm: Wrap up12.30am - 1.00pm: NetworkingSpeakers: Chie Matsumoto, UnfilteredChie is a Tokyo-based journalist who reports on labour, gender, social minorities and other rights issues for domestic and overseas media in Japanese and English.
