FacilitatorHanoi Lok (Institute of Adult Learning)Hanoi Lok is an Associate Adult Educator with IAL and other higher learning such as SMU, NUS and UNISIM. As an ex-MOE staff under Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore, she supervised over 30 primary, secondary schools and junior colleges and trained over 2,000 principals and teachers in teaching methodology and curriculum-related workshops and seminars.Hanoi is also a recipient of SMU’s Teaching Excellence Award (Outstanding Adjunct, LKC School of Business).SynopsisThis session explores the roles of a lecturer and their students – who should be more involved in the learning process -- the lecturer or the students?We will discuss the changing expectations and behaviours of Gen Y students and their preference in learning. We will also demonstrate how, with some thoughtfulness and a little more efforts, lecturers could turn their lessons into fun experiences for their students.Participants are encouraged to share whether active teaching or active learning is appropriate for their subject or discipline and hopefully we would all take away something workable and useful in their role as educators!David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle provides the basis for this sharing session. Kolb suggested that the adoption of four stages in reaching learning objectives. These four stages involve concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization and active experimentation.While lecturing is used extensively in tertiary education in the past, the introduction of social media has necessitated a change in delivering information and also changes in learning approach to adults and children alike.
