MaGIC Academy: Ideation & Business Acumen


Get to know the local startup ecosystem and discover key resources for entrepreneurs. Put on your entrepreneur cap for the best exposure to efficient business models while experimenting with cool ideas. Try your hand at validating ideas coming up with a truly effective solution or making quick decisions. Learnings are accompanied by practical experiences on Design Thinking by working on teams through the IDEO Steps, building a Business Model Canvas and a Business Plan, including Financial Tools such as Budgeting and Revenue Forecasting and the basic concepts of Fundraising and Pitching.

Key Learnings

  1. Exposure to contexts and trends across the entrepreneurship industry and how the Malaysian startup ecosystem leverages on this.
  2. Learn key methodologies in launching a startup or your career as an entrepreneur including Design Thinking (IDEO based), Business Model Generation and Business Planning and Financial Plan.
  3. Build your business acumen and your financial know how to sustain strong fundamentals within your startup.

Speaker(s) Description

Lais is an entrepreneur focused on building companies that improve the way companies are built. Lais aims to engineer thriving startup ecosystems through community building. Currently Founder at 8spaces (community driven platform to connect people through spaces). Previously, Facilitator of the socio-cultural aspects of MAP and Startup Grind East Community Director and MaGIC Community Ambassador: building communities around technology startups to provide these a nourishing context for growth.

Oko is a global entrepreneur from Mongolia and has developed numerous companies and client services. He has 9 years of experience being an entrepreneur, meanwhile simultaneously giving back to the community by leading efforts that have designed and shaped the Mongolian startup ecosystem. Previously, Oko has been a Regional Director of South East Asia at UP Global Network and Community since 2011 and launched Startup Mongolia to drive economic growth and quality training and resources for early stage startups and entrepreneurs.

Lalitha Wemel is a community architect based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is incredibly passionate about fostering entrepreneurship, grassroots leadership, and strong communities. Lalitha has been involved in various startup projects and communities for the better part of the last decade, both in and out of Malaysia.

Florian helps entrepreneurs to run their business, through financial management, data and metrics intelligence and communications among teams. A generalist, Florian learnt different sides of doing business over time: having pored over companies’ annual reports and analyzing financial metrics and term sheets while other kids were doing far more “age-appropriate” activities, Florian joined Charles Firmin-Didot’s Talents team at AXA IM to invest over 1.3 billion Euro in globally listed entrepreneurial companies.
