Chinese Theatre Circle Limited
(CTC), in collaboration with Kreta Ayer Community Club Chinese Opera Group and
China Guangzhou Hong Dow Cantonese Opera Group, is organising and
presenting the Singapore Cantonese Opera Festival from 21 - 24 July 2016 to
provide greater impetus to the promotion and development of Chinese Opera in
general, and Cantonese Opera in particular. In furtherance of CTC's vision in
developing tomorrow's Chinese Opera, the Festival programme is specially
designed to highlight CTC's effort in making Chinese Opera relevant in our
modern society as well as showcasing upcoming talents groomed by CTC. There
will be three different full-length operas and one session of
"Cantonese Opera Extravaganza" as follows:-
(i) 21 July 2016 at 7.30
pm - "A Costly Impulse", a China script featuring
CTC's Artistic Director cum Cultural Medallion recipient Joanna Wong
partnering China's Plum Blossom Award winner Mr Ow Khai Ming in a
story about the tragic consequences of a jealous Emperor's unfounded suspicion
over his Empress' alleged infidelity;
(ii) 22 July 2016 at 7.30
pm - "Mystery Of The Embroidered Shoe", a Hong Kong script
featuring Chan Mei Yin, Chan Mei Leng, and Lo Siu Ling, all groomed by Joanna
Wong to take centrestage, in a story of how a witty magistrate solved a murder
by matching an embroidered shoe left at the crime scene with
that concealed by the suspect;
(iii) 23 July 2016 at 7.30 pm
- "Madam Green Snake", a creative opera written by homegrown
playwright Leslie Wong featuring world award winner See Too Hoi Siang in a
story that is a sequel to the legend of the popular household tale of
"Madam White Snake";
(iv) 24 July 2016 at 2.00 pm
- "Cantonese Opera Extravaganza" comprising two excerpts
"Dream At The River Luo" and "Joy At The Imperial garden"
featuring latest upcoming talents Tina Wong and Henry Wong, and six other
excerpts and one song.It is pertinent to emphasise that
"Madam Green Snake" is the highlight of the Festival. Leslie Wong has
condensed the opera to a two and a half hour production specially directed by
veteran China Cantonese Opera director Chen Xiao Mei, and in which See Too Hoi
Siang will display her newly acquired skills of "Bian Lien" (Face
Changing) and her martial art prowess at wielding two swords with long
tassles. The opera will also showcase a blend of classical Chinese music
(hua yue), Beijing Opera music, and Cantonese music. The opera has recently
been presented in June at the prestigious China Guangzhou International
Cantonese Festival 2016.
All performances will be staged at
the Drama Centre and accompanied by both English and Chinese subtitles.
