There are many music education methods and curricula in the world, some more officious and Western-tradition bound, with five-lined notation, sight-reading and perfecting technical drills as their cornerstone on one extreme and the more informal pop-learning schools advocating improvisations and playing-by-ear at the other end of the continuum. The former is a turn-off for many but the latter is criticised as lacking rigour. How can we have the best of both worlds?
