What can you do to make Singapore a more inclusive and kind place for these communities to exist? Let's talk about it! BackgroundAs Singapore’s first co-operative by and for diverse changemakers, A Good Space recognises that social issues are never isolated, but are all interconnected. We want to push for more of such conversations to happen. This can only happen if we have changemakers and folks from diverse backgrounds taking part in these conversations. Lived Intersections @ A Good Space is the start of a recurring series which hopes to prioritise intersectionality and lived experiences as the lens to look at varying social issues and bring these conversations to the ground. Lived Intersections has 3 broad aims: (1) Prioritising lived experiences: What are some of the lived experiences of folks from these communities that are largely unnoticed by the public's eye?(2) Understanding concerns of the wider community: What then are some concerns the larger community face?(3) Public allyship and support: What does allyship look like for these folks? What are some requests the community wishes to make of the public? What kind of support do they need? How can the rest of society help support them?We also want to encourage communities to make use of this platform to raise more awareness for their causes. What is the format of Lived Intersections #1?The duration for the entire event is 2.5 hours long. Lived Intersections is not your typical panel discussion. Other than there being a live panel where all speakers will discuss questions, there will also be individual breakout rooms for the various communities to dive a little bit deeper into each topic of discussion. Each room is unique as it has been carefully curated by both the speaker/s and moderator representing the various communities. You will have to choose which room you want to partake in when you sign up. The rough timeline of events in Lived Intersections #1 is as follows: 3 - 3.30pm: Introductory Panel 3.30 - 4.30pm: Individual Breakout Rooms4.30 - 5.30pm: Exploratory PanelThe main moderator for the event is Dr. Douglas O'Loughlin, who is an associate consultant at Civil Service College.  Event DetailsDate: 31 October 2020 (Saturday) Time: 3 - 5.30pm This event will be taking place over Zoom. What is the theme for Lived Intersections #1?The first of this series touches on mental health and how it intersects with communities that are often left out of dominant mental health narratives. We had chosen to focus on these 5 communities because we thought that many of these intersections are explored and talked about a lot less than they should be. Some of the speakers are also part of the AGS co-operative and we want to be able to provide these changemakers a platform to share more about issues that they care about. We will be providing some resources you can further explore for each community in order for you to make an informed choice as to which room you want to partake in when you sign up. Please remember to come back to this page to get your ticket after! Lived Intersections #1 will feature these 5 communities:1. The Deaf community Our very lovely speaker Lily is a Deaf advocate as well as a sign language educator. She would be sharing more about her lived experiences, some mental health struggles of folks in her community, as well as what you can do to be a better ally to the community. There will be a sign language interpreter in this room. Some resources: Introduction to Hearing Loss/Deafness Introduction to Deaf CultureSome challenges Deaf folks face2. Migrant Workers community Migrant workers are often called the "hidden backbone" or the "invisible community" (Source) because of how their concerns and lives are rarely ever spoken about despite them being such an invaluable part of our communities. Our amazing speakers, Bhing and Tasrif, will share more about their lived experiences of being a migrant/foreign domestic worker in Singapore, as well as how they want to be supported. Some resources: Migrant Worker COVID-19 CrisisMental Health concerns of migrant workers3.
