 The Prangin Canal, located to the southern end of George Town World Heritage Site, was established in the early 19th century for defence purposes of the town. In 1882, the canal was modified and subsequently the market was built. The canal and market continued to serve Penang up until the 20th century, before parts or the canal were paved over, the market relocated, buildings abandoned and left to rot.Over the past few decades, several plans were proposed onto redeveloping the canal. Previous plans were culturally and environmentally conscious, proposing the area to be transformed into public parks and open spaces, arts and culture district and the such. However, in the upcoming Penang Transport Master Plan, the Prangin area may see a major change instead. The Prangin Canal and its surrounding area is marked as the transport hub, with high rise buildings, pylons and an interchange complex for the proposed monorail and light rail transit systems. So, what is the future of Prangin Canal? What is the desired use for such an important space of George Town? Come join Penang Heritage Trust’s Lim Gaik Siang, Khoo Salma and Goh Hsiao Mei as they present some interesting history, heritage, findings and plans identified for Prangin.
