We plan to present various fields of work in cooperation with COS KYOTO, organizer of Design Week Kyoto.In the sixth episode we want to introduce you to the studio Kyoto Hozuai Kobo, which specializes on dyeing with indigo. In the early 1900s, plants called “true indigo” (indigofera) were cultivated throughout Japan. A special type of indigofera, called “Kyo-ai” was grown in Kyoto and had a high dyeing quality. However, Kyo-ai was replaced by imported or chemically produced indigo by the 1920s and cultivation and production of indigo in Japan was discontinued. Meanwhile, Kyoto Hozuai Kobo has rediscovered and reestablished the cultivation of Kyoto’s indigofera in Hozu, Kameoka. Japanese indigofera is not only widely famous as a colouring resource among Japanese people, but also as a type of health food.In the streaming, you will be able to see the fields on which indigofera is grown. Additionally, the methods of cultivation and processing into colouring will be explained. Last but not least, the techniques of dyeing with indigo will be presented.About Kyoto Hozuai KoboThere are the following two possibilities for participation:1.
