It is a contrast against egoism (self-centric). Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” postulates self-centredness as an innate quality that we all have to ensure our survivability. However, other-centric individuals that work together as a group triumphs over other competing groups. There are many research that suggest that living a life for the betterment of others also increase our own well-being.
