The interdisciplinary ‘Engineering for Life’ initiative was founded by the University of Sheffield to address these challenges – using engineering techniques to develop innovative healthcare solutions. Under this initiative, the Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine is developing a predictive approach to medicine. Experts from the Institute are developing computer simulations of the human body for clinical use, to improve diagnosis and treatment, resulting in a transformational impact on healthcare.Sheffield Engineering; the Future The University of Sheffield is one of the UK’s leading universities, with an international reputation for world-class teaching and research excellence. With seven departments and two interdisciplinary programmes covering all the engineering disciplines, Engineering at Sheffield is one of the biggest and best engineering faculties in the UK. As engineers they are motivated to make the world a better place, tackling the grand challenges of the future – from energy and manufacturing to healthcare and infrastructure. The SpeakersProfessor Mike Hounslow FREngAs Pro-Vice Chancellor for Engineering at the University of Sheffield, Mike is responsible for the operation of all seven departments and three interdisciplinary programme areas, covering all the engineering disciplines. With a research income of £77.4M per annum, second only to Cambridge, and over 5,000 students, the Faculty is one of the biggest providers of engineering research and education in the UK.This includes the Faculty’s partnership with the University’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing. This collaboration between academia and industry has become a model for forward-thinking research centres worldwide.Mike is a Chemical Engineer by background and worked for ICI in Australia before pursuing an academic career in the UK, The Netherlands and Australia. His research and teaching are concerned with the manufacturing of ‘chemicals’ in solid form, most prominently in the home and personal car, food and pharmaceutical sectors. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Dr Claudia Mazzà
Claudia
received her PhD in Bioengineering in 2004. She carried out her PhD and
post-doctoral research activities at the Department of Human Movement Sciences
at the University of Rome "Foro Italico", where she was appointed
Assistant Professor from 2006 to 2013. She joined the Insigneo Institute for in silico medicine and the Department of
Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in Feb
2013.
Claudia's
research is currently funded by the EPSRC and by the EU and focuses on the
biomechanics of human movement and on the definition of experimental and
modelling techniques for the assessment of an individual’s locomotor and
postural abilities. Her latest research evolves around the combined use of gait
analysis and imaging for the modelling of the human joints and the use of
wearable sensors for both clinical and home monitoring. She has co-authored over 40 journal papers
and collaborates with a number of research groups both at national and
international level.Date: Wednesday 25th MayTime: 6.30pm - 7.30pm - followed by light receptionVenue: NTUC Centre, 7th Floor, Room 701, 1 Marina Boulevard , 018989Data Protection noticeYour privacy is important to British Council (Singapore) Limited.
