Relatively unfamiliar to the Singapore market, South Africa is a source of great quality wines that combine the elegance of the old world with the approachability of the new. Beginning with the whites, taste a typical South African Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, and see how they measure up against their famous French counterparts from regions such as Loire Valley and Burgundy. The Winery of Good Hope has plantings in Stellenbosch, Elgin and Robertson districts, while the Serengati range of wines by Swartland Winery comes from the much more rugged district of Swartland which is known for its untrellised bush vines with deep roots. However, priced at over $150 a bottle in Singapore, we won't have the opportunity to taste this high-alcohol marvel this time, but will instead try a beautiful salmon-coloured Blanc de Noir from the same winery.Groot Constantia Blanc de Noir 2013Moving on to the reds, we begin with a crowd-pleasing Pinotage-Shiraz blend from a large scale winery that sources its grapes from various growers situated all over the Western Cape geographical unit. (Note: Wine has been changed from earlier choice of Merlot-RubyCabernet)And finally, our last stop will be at one of the oldest and most respected winegrowing districts of South Africa, the Stellenbosch District just east of Cape Town. Here, we will be trying a Pinotage from Kanonkop Winery, a grape that is unique to Africa, created almost a century ago in Stellenbosch University by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsaut.
