One of Italy's most popular tourist destinations with mountains, lakes and art cities, Veneto is also among the foremost wine-producing regions of Italy, boasting the largest output of DOC/DOCG quality wines in the country. Our first stop will be Torresella Winery, found in a picturesque corner of Veneto between the Venetian Lagoon and the Alps. With persistent sunlight, narrow diurnal temperature fluctuations, and a large volume of mineral-rich water flowing from the mountains, winemaking could prove challenging here, but the folks at the winery have come up with ingenious hydraulic engineering and underground micro irrigation projects to mitigate the environmental conditions, resulting in the creation of an excellent estate capable of producing top quality wines.Torresella Prosecco Extra Dry NVTorresella Pinot Grigio 2013Then head west along the Adige river and arrive at Valpolicella, where powerful and complex red wines are the order of the day. Here, the star grapes are Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, which are traditionally used in a blend that's the signature of the region. We will be tasting three great wines from the Cantina Valpolicella Negrar winery, all made with the same grapes but in very different styles. Cantina Valpolicella Negrar is one of the oldest known producers of the Amarone style of wine dating back to the 1930, and is also noted and respected for its extensive quality project in 1989 which identified top viticultural sites and ultimately gave birth to the Domini Veneti label.Domini Veneti Valpolicella DOC Classico Biologico 2014Domini Veneti Ripasso Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2012Domini Veneti Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico 2012Italy as a wine country is so extensive and diverse, and we would never be able to do justice to it in one session.
