[Film Series] Whisper of History: Echoes of the Cold War in Asia 21 - 30 September 2020 About the Series Arranged around exhibitions and trajectories germane to Cold War history in Asia, particularly, Wartime Artists of Vietnam and Wishful Images, this film programme presents four films, each with their own contrasting view on the imaginative self in war and conflict. Through layers of film screenings, conversations, and roundtables, several counter-balancing accounts of our self-image arise in response to conflict, as filmmakers grapple with their respective conflicts and contemporary realities. Here, the fragments of images arising from the vestiges of the Cold War offer variegated and alternative lines of witness from its hegemonic geo-political imaginary, presenting responses, memories, dreams, anxieties and intimate knowledges, converging ultimately at shared notions of life and destiny held in the crucible of war. Expressing a certain humanity above histories made opaque through state and ideological processes are these films that form a desideratum of the past, a representation of things once hoped for, the “whisper of history, heard above the noise of time.” Film ScreeningsRegistration for the film screening will give you access to all four films. You only need to register once for the film screening if you do not wish to attend the Film Club sessions. After registration, a confirmation email will be sent to you with a link to the password. 22 SEP / Available from 7:30PM - 11PMFar From Vietnam (1967) [PG] Initiated and edited by Chris Marker, Far From Vietnam is an epic 1967 collaboration between cinema greats Jean-Luc Godard, Joris Ivens, William Klein, Claude Lelouch and Alain Resnais, made in protest of American military involvement in Vietnam.24 SEP / Available from 7:30PM - 11PM‎Little Girl of Hanoi (1975) [PG]Filmed on-site at the wreckage of the Christmas bombing that took place in Hanoi (Operation Linebacker II, 1972), this film follows an 11-year-old girl who wanders the streets in search of her father. 28 SEP / Available from 7:30PM - 11PMThe Future Cries Beneath Our Soil (2018) [NC16]Four veterans of the Vietnam War pass the long days of their dotage in a documentary on a life haunted by war. Pham Thu Hang’s moving documentary deftly captures the dark shadow of war and death, present in even everyday conversation and simple gestures. 30 SEP / Available from 7:30PM - 11PMForgetting Vietnam (2016) [PG]A lyrical essay film which unfolds spatially as a dialogue between the two elements—land and water—that underlie the formation of the Vietnamese term for ‘country’ (đất nứớc). Film Club[Note: The Film Club sessions are currently full. Please email us at museum@nus.edu.sg if you wish to be added to the waiting list.]Organised around the film screenings, these roundtable discussions present an opportunity for participants to delve deeper and access the films through tangents and prompts initiated by moderators. The Film Club sessions are limited to 20 pax per session and will require participants to have watched the relevant films prior to the discussions. Some pre-reading may also be required of participants to engage in discussion. Please note also that the session will be recorded and uploaded after the event on the film programme's website and other NUS Museum platforms for publicity purposes. 25 SEP / 7:30PM Film Club #1 — Resistance and PropagandaHeld in conversation with Dr. Darlene Machell Espena and Liam Holmes, this film club tackles the cinematic grammar of resistance and propaganda, particularly in how it pertains to the cultural and cinematic influence of the Cold War in Southeast Asia. Using the films Far From Vietnam and Little Girl of Hanoi as points of departure, as well as presentations from speakers, roundtable participants will engage in active conversations to unpack the emergence of national identity and public opinion in the cultural and political context of the Cold War. 29 Sep / 7:30PM Film Club #2 — Affinities and Erasure Organised around the screening of The Future Cries Beneath Our Soil, this roundtable features presentations from curators Siddharta Perez and Roger Nelson (National Gallery Singapore). Circulating the erasures of representation through the substitution of bodies in film, as well as the ways in which film performs memory, this film club session will enable active discussion amongst roundtable participants on microhistories as well as political and cultural affinities within Southeast Asian cinema.
