Join us on Saturday, 5 September 2020, as we commemorate this year’s International Primate Day with Tales from Africa: Safeguarding Chimpanzees in Congo with Dr. Rebeca Atencia, the 11th Primate Lecture by the Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore) organized in partnership with CDL and SSA.As Executive Director of JGI Congo, Dr. Atencia will share with us her work at the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo, where rescued and often injured chimps from the illegal bushmeat and wildlife pet trade are cared for and evaluated for eventual release back into natural and protected habitats. A famous Tchimpounga resident who was released is Wounda, the chimp Dr. Atencia and her team nursed back to health and who gave Dr. Jane Goodall a heartwarming farewell hug before she set off for the forests. Dr. Atencia has received accolades for her work throughout her professional career, including the City Hall Gold Medal presented by the city of Ferrol in Spain in 2010 in recognition of her great ape conservation work.
