A colloquial Malay term, 'Pe'el' means 'habit' or 'behaviour', and Kide's paintings revolve around the everyday lives of Malaysians and their habits during the 1950s and 1960s. With its bold, bright colours and vivid descriptions of everyday bustles in traditional villages and post-colonial era towns, Kide evokes beautiful scenes of Malaysia from a bygone era. The scenes in Pe'el are both big and lively, such as the revelry of a traditional Malay wedding, or quiet and seemingly innocuous depictions of getting a haircut, courtship or doing laundry by the well.In the fourth instalment of our online Zoom tour of Kide Baharudin’’s Pe'el exhibition at Tun Perak Co-op, we have artist Fritilldea, who was Kide's mentor in the VANS Custom Culture competition way back in 2017. As an independent artist residing in Kuala Lumpur, Black or Mohd Anuar is well known for his illustrations and murals, some of which we have come across around town.
