MWKA Online Talk: Drink Driving Offences in Malaysia

The police have stepped up their “Ops Mabuk” operations to curb road accidents caused by drivers driving under the influence of alcohol. Many have been arrested, charged and convicted for committing this offence under the Road Transport Act 1987 (RTA). According to the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, 1,236 motorists nationwide have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol under the RTA from 1 January 2020 to 15 June 2020.

Janessa Kok graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Liverpool in 2014 and completed her Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) in 2016. She read in the Chambers of MahWengKwai & Associates under the guidance of Mr Richard Wee and Ms Sarah Kambali. Janessa was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in December 2017.

She continues her journey in this legal profession with MahWengKwai & Associates in the areas of employment law, corporate and commercial litigation and general litigation particularly in family, criminal, debt recovery and contractual disputes.


Ryan Cheong graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) with First Class Honours from the University of Reading, UK and completed his Bar Professional Training Certificate (BPTC) in City Law School with a grade of Very Competent.

Ryan is currently undergoing his Pupillage in the Chambers of MahWengKwai & Associates under the tutelage of Dato Mah Weng Kwai and Raymond Mah.
