The first half of this talk by Anju Mary Paul explores the power of shifting mental maps in shaping how potential migrants rate and rank different destination options, discussing how different groups of migrants think about Singapore before they arrive and also after their arrival. The second half of this talk considers the power of imagination in constructing the figure of the migrant, highlighting how different groups of migrants to Singapore have been classified in the collective imagination, making some seem more worthy than others and some groups more easy to integrate into the Singapore identity. This online talk will be streamed on theartshouse.sg from 30 Aug, Sun, 4pm. About LumiNation 2020 - The Migration EditionHeld alongside with National Day, The Arts House’s LumiNation festival explores our Singaporean identity through performances, talks and more. This third edition of LumiNation will take place digitally, as it continues to set its sights on uncovering Singapore’s lesser-known narratives and hidden histories, inviting audiences to connect together parts of the full Singaporean conversation.
