Discussing Race Issues Amid BLM（ブラック・ライヴズ・マターを目指して人種問題につて語ろう！）<Overview>The world is changing right before our eyes. What was normal before has been revealed to be racist or passively contributing to racism, so naturally many people are confused about how to be in this new paradigm. Let’s spend the day thinking about anti-racism by using the NHK example. Recently NHK behaved very badly but was able to turn a terrible situation into an awesome opportunity to build bridges between the Japanese and the black community here in Japan. Baye McNeil was involved in this process from beginning to end and will share with you how he helped guide the media giant in its decision making. And how we can all learn and grow from it. This workshop will be conducted in English.<About Mr.Baye McNeil>Baye McNeil is an author, columnist, lecturer and activist, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He’s the author of two critically-acclaimed books on life as a non-Japanese / person of African descent living in Japan. His column “Black Eye” is featured in The Japan Times. In it, he profiles people of color from the African continent and the African diaspora, as well as shares his own reflections on living in Japan while black and on current events. He also lectures and conducts workshops on the black experience in Japan, race issues, reducing presumptions, and diversity & inclusiveness in Japan, at universities, companies, and organizations throughout Japan. He has also spearheaded activism in Japan, including a successful petition to preempt the airing of a blackface minstrel show on FUJI-TV, in 2015, and took NIPPON-TV to task in 2018 for having a famous comedian perform in blackface on their most viewed program of the year. He’s been profiled in many publications including the NY Times and has done Op-Eds for several including the Washington Post. He currently resides with his wife in Yokohama. <概要＞私たちの目の前で世界は変わりつつあります。以前は普通だったことが、人種差別的であったり、人種差別に寄与していることが明らかになってきたため、この新しいパラダイムにどう関わるべきかと多くの人が混乱しています。NHKの例から人種差別反対について考じっくり考えてみませんか。最近、NHKで人種差別的な放送がありました。しかし、これは日本の黒人社会と日本人の架け橋となる絶好のチャンスにもなりました。Baye McNeil氏はこのプロセスに最初から最後まで関わっており、メディアの巨人の意思決定をどのようにサポートしたかについての経験を紹介します。そして、誰もがそこから学び、成長することができるのかについてみなさんと考えていきたいと思います。ワークショップは英語で行われます。ブルックリン生まれのマクニール氏はコラムニストであり活動家として日本で活躍しています。Blackの視点から日本社会の人種問題を学びましょう。
