Join us for the
fourth of this series of Roundtable@SAM on Art and the Big Ideas
of a Small Nation as experts across diverse fields share how the value
of Equality affects and influences their experience, expectations, and visions
of the individual, communities, and the state.
This Roundtable
is part of the Crescent Project: Art Embraces All for the exhibition, 5
Stars: Art Reflects on Peace, Justice, Equality, Democracy and Progress.
To encourage a coherent and holistic discussion, each speaker is given 10
minutes to respond to a preset question before the session is open to the

Speakers
Corinna Lim (Executive Director, AWARE)
Corinna Lim is the first Executive Director of the Association of Women for Action
and Research (AWARE), Singapore’s leading gender equality advocacy group. Lim
leads AWARE’s work in advocating gender equality and social and economic
justice. She was instrumental in setting up AWARE’s Sexual Assault Care Centre
and Catalyse Consulting, the Diversity and Inclusion training and consultancy
division of AWARE.
Reuben Wong
(Director of Studies, College of Alice and Peter Tan)
Reuben Wong is Director of Studies at the College of Alice & Peter Tan (CAPT).
He also holds the Jean Monnet Chair (European Integration & Foreign Policy)
and is Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at NUS.
His current research interests include the construction of Chinese identity vis-à-vis Europe, the politics of
disability rights, and education and employment policies for Singaporeans with
special needs.
Sun Koh (Filmmaker, Singapore)
An award-winning Singaporean filmmaker, Sun Koh started her career when
Singapore Cinema had its second awakening in the late 1990s. Koh has written,
produced and directed numerous international film festival favourites, such as
her debut short film The Secret Heaven, which won 5 major international awards including the Silver Hugo at
the Chicago International Film Festival.
Yip Pin Xiu
(Paralympic Gold Medallist, Singapore)
Yip Pin Xiu is a Paralympian swimmer and a world record setter for the 50m
backstroke in the 8th ASEAN Para Games in 2015. She made sports history by
becoming the first Singaporean to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in
2008. Yip is also a role model and a source of inspiration to other youths.
Moderator
T.K. Sabapathy (Art Historian, Singapore)
T.K.Sabapathy teaches courses in the history of art in the Department of
Architecture at the National University of Singapore (beginning in 1981) and is
a research fellow in the Centre for Contemporary Art-Nanyang Technological
University. He has published on art and artists in Southeast Asia.

5 Stars: Art Reflects on Peace, Justice, Equality,
Democracy and Progress is SAM’s salute to Singapore’s Golden Jubilee and the
five stars on the Singapore flag which represent universal humanist values.
Engaging with these “big ideas” through contemporary art, 5 Stars
is an exhibition of five specially commissioned works, curated to encourage
contemplation of what these shared human ideals mean in the present day, and
how they might continue to help us envision our futures.
