Equal marriage is one of them. Although Japan has not yet extended full equality to its LGBT citizens in this area, important steps have already been made with the recognition of same-sex partnerships in Shibuya and Setagaya wards. The Equal Marriage Alliance believes that marriage equality is inevitable in Japan, but will nonetheless require a coordinated effort by activists, legal professionals and the community at large. Equal Marriage Alliance (EMA) is a non-profit organization focused on achieving marriage equality in Japan. Our members are a diverse group of activists and supporters committed to making this goal a reality. We recognize that support from the legal community is a key component of our mission and that without this support equal marriage would be an even more distant objective. Evan Wolfson is the Founder and President of the US-based organization “Freedom to Marry”. Evan began his fight for marriage equality more than 30 years ago when he was still a law student at Harvard and when few people even within the LGBT community thought this was an achievable goal. He is the author of “Why Marriage Matters; America, Equality and Gay People's Right to Marry”. Evan’s writings and lifelong commitment to pursuit of marriage equality were instrumental to its ultimate achievement in the US.
