The hope is that stable coins will enhance the speed, cost and transparency of personal and commercial financial activities without the risk of price volatility and criminal activity that is associated with decentralized cryptocurrencies. In Japan, several major banks and technology companies have already released their own stable coins, with many more expected to do so on the horizon. Meanwhile, globally, large financial institutions are adapting the innovation of tokenization to securities markets and anticipate that this will eventually transform the liquidity and volume traded in physical and alternative assets as well. Due to regulatory updates from the Japan Financial Services Agency, this year is expected to see the launch of a security token market here in Japan and many large Japanese financial institutions are already ready to start issuing and trading tokenized securities. However, stable coins and security token transactions are recorded using blockchain technology so they are subject to the same security challenges that affect existing cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, such as safe custody and management of private keys.
