Pedagogical Practice Sharing: Designing a Research-led Curriculum: Contemporary Dance Composition

Designing a Research-led Curriculum: Contemporary Dance Composition

Facilitator: Dr Caren Carino (PhD, MFA, BEd)

"We want to introduce a new breed of dance artists to the world stage who bring together contemporary Asian and Western perspectives, sensibilities and expressions." - Dr Caren Carino (Vice-Dean, Dance Programme)

NAFA’s Dance curriculum is focused on Western and Asian dance training, performance and creation—underpinned by somatic practices and contextualisation. The integrated dance curriculum sees contemporary dance creation/composition/choreography as a dynamic space where dance students can be guided to produce a personal contemporary dance work influenced by their cultural heritage, sojourns and exposure.

While there are different strategies, approaches and tools to creating contemporary dance, given the profile of the Dance Programme’s students who generally have little or no training in their cultural dance form, this author proposes research-based creation as one approach. This sharing session is about the author’s exploration and development of a research-based dance composition method through research.
