Prof Tan will be speaking on the following topic.Electoral Politics and Constitutional TensionsBetween 1965 and 2006, the Singapore Constitution was amended more than 40 times creating several unique institutions like the GRC, the NCMP and the Elected President. While these various institutions dealt superficially with the problems of democratic representation in a single-party dominant state, recent trends in voter behaviour have exposed the serious weaknesses of some of these institutional arrangements, prompting calls for constitutional reforms. Kevin Tan, a scholar of constitutional law and who writes also on history and politics, explores how voting in recent elections – parliamentary and presidential – seriously challenge the assumptions upon which some of these institutions were built and proposes some radical reforms.N.B.
