Consider that a child born in Haiti, if lucky enough to escape child slavery, will make a living of less than $5 a day performing backbreaking labor. By no fault of his own, the child is locked out of privileges like the wonder of education and the arts, doomed to a lifetime of abject poverty. On the other hand, the average Singaporean child who graduates from university and is employed at an entry-level wage, is already placed at a level of wealth far surpassing more than 98% of the world's population. Even the poorest Singaporean enjoys access to first-world standards of education, healthcare, and the richness of the world's arts and cultures. The answer to this harsh disparity in life is economic growth, which carries an miraculous humanitarian effect, posing a fascinating yet deeply serious question for economists and historians. How do nations become rich? To what extent should growth be led by governments or left to free markets? How does democracy and rule of law come into play? Or is foreign aid the answer? This question has been asked by Adam Smith in his 1776 magnum opus "Wealth of Nations", to Acemoglu & Robinson's wildly popular 2012 thesis "Why Nations Fail". Yet, it continues to be greatly misunderstood by the public today.Admission to the event is free of charge and all are welcome.
