This is how you may describe Fuglen [The Bird] in a nutshell—a new and innovative lifestyle concept originating from Oslo, Norway. It offers high-quality specialty coffees and teas ('Daylife'), exquisite cocktails using the best ingredients ('Nightlife')—all in the surroundings of a nice Norwegian vintage design interior ('Lifestyle'). The concept was initiated by Einar K. Holthe who in 2008 started a complete revival of Fuglen—whose roots go back to 1963.A 2007 Norwegian Barista Champion, Einar further upgraded the high-quality specialty coffee and tea offering—and brought in friend and Norwegian vintage design expert Peppe Trulsen as co-owner to create a unique and genuine vintage design interior for the cafe. The idea is to provide a living showroom of leading Norwegian vintage design products—mostly from the 1950s and 60s—where all interior items are shown in their original environment, as all the interior is vintage from the same era.To complete the total concept, Einar asked bartender friend Halvor Skiftun Digernes —winner of the 2011 Linie Cocktail Award— to join as co-owner and create a cocktail bar, with 'the best of the best' cocktails, for evenings and nightlife. This great concept may have remained in Norway only—and a loss for the rest of the world—had circumstances not conspired to bring The Bird out of its domestic nest. Almost unknown even in Norway—except among gourmet coffee and cocktail lovers in Oslo—as recently as 2010, in 2011 Fuglen was featured in Monocle magazine and the New York Times, among others. In less than a year—in May 2012—The Bird landed in Tokyo! And its next landing is going to be New York.How this all happened—and so quickly—is the exciting story that Einar K. Holthe will tell us in words and pictures at this unique, one-and-only event on June 22. Do not miss it!Guided Tour of Norwegian Icons Vintage Design ExhibitionFollowing Einar's presentation, you will get a guided tour of the Norwegian Icons Exhibition at Hillside by Peppe Trulsen, Fuglen Co-Owner and in charge of Fuglen Interior and vintage design boutique. Peppe is one of the leading authorities on Norwegian vintage design—and will be able to tell all the stories behind the designers and their products on display at this exhibition.Norwegian Icons is an international exhibition, and the first of its kind—certainly on this scale and with an international tour schedule. The exhibition was first launched in Oslo in January 2013, and after visiting Tokyo it will move on to New York later in the year. The main purpose is to showcase leading Norwegian designers and their products from the period of 1940-1975—many of whom played important roles and influenced design trends in Scandinavia and Europe during that time and beyond. After the guided tour, we will have an informal gathering at the (temporary) 'Fuglen Hillside Cafe' next to the exhibition area—where you can talk with other participants, enjoy first class coffees and teas—and world famous Norwegian waffles.
