They were conceived by Stamford Raffles based on his 1822 Master Town Plan. Raffles felt it was important to create a sense of community among people of the same ethnicity and culture in order to help them settle and assimilate quickly. Despite Singapore’s rapid modernisation over the last two centuries, its vibrant past and old traditions still endure in these colourful wonderfully gritty quarters. Today, these dynamic districts thrive on both the old and the new, and buzz with activity, excitement and re-invention. We will stroll through the streets and lanes of Little India, Kampong Glam and Chinatown, to hear the stories of those who once dwelled there. We’ll explore a few architectural gems and admire life-sized murals by celebrated international and local artists, in particular the talented Yip Yew Chong. The nostalgia of these heritage neighbourboods is wonderfully captured by Yip who documents Singapore’s history and heritage through his murals and expresses the romance of places and moments by" blending sights, sounds, smells and tastes!”
