Dec 11 - NewSound

Established in 2016, NewSound is a modern jazz ensemble based in Malaysia that is taking the local music scene by storm. The band name says it all, as their mission is to push the boundaries and limitations of jazz composition by constantly releasing and performing new and original material. Their sound is greatly influenced by modern jazz music with a touch of fusion, latin and not forgetting the good ol’ roots of straight ahead swing.

John Dip Silas (Keys)

No stranger to the Malaysian music scene, John’s sound is widely influenced by the greats such as Brad Mehldau, Lars Jannson and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. He has also been hugely impacted by the likes of Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and Richard Bona in his compositional techniques. John is the leader of NewSound and has previously led his own trio, the City Quartet and is also a key member of international set up, the Lawrence Wright Jazz Ensemble.

Scott Murphy (Tenor Saxophone)

Hailing from Scotland, Scott has had wide exposure and influence over his playing and compositional style. His sound has been shaped tremendously by the great Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Tommy Smith and the likes. Back in his home country, Scott is a pivotal part of award winning jazz ensemble “Fat Suit”. His latest project in Asia as a band leader has been a series of shows in tribute to the great Thelonious Monk.

Hiroyuki Yagi (Soprano Saxophone)

Originally from Japan, Yagi is both a musician and a high ranking business executive in the corporate world. Yet, his commitments to his day job has never stopped his passion for music, having under his belt the experience of performing with a jazz fusion band for many years prior to his move to Malaysia. Over here he leads his own set up along with renowned Japanese jazz guitarist, Akihito Fuse, forming the “Yagi-Fuse Band”.

Joyie Lai (Electric Guitar)

Joyie is the youngest but definitely not the least member of the band. She is one of the most exciting young guitarist to be rising up in Malaysia with a unique individual sound that adds colour to the set up of the band. She will be a name to look out for in the near future.

Icco Elnoel (Electric Bass)

The man with the blue-st bass guitar in town. Icco has a solid sense of rhythm and is one of the most in demand bass players in Malaysia. Apart from jazz, he is also well versed in pop music all the way to RnB and Hip Hop and has performed with notable artists from each of the mentioned genre of music.

Terrence Ling (Drums)

Terrence is one of the most in demand drummers in town because of his versatility and great performing and team attitude. He also leads his own projects, “Ground Passenger”, “Terrence Ling Trio” and is also a pivotal member in the local jazz fusion band “JSY”.
