She rounds up fearless collective energy to self-soothe and celebrates ‘nafsu’ (lust in Malay). With Malay folk dance training, she questions nature and nurtures through the lens of a Malay woman today. Hasyimah seeks to collaborate with communities and design pedagogy for Singapore Malay dance that has relevance to contemporary worldly issues. She proposes that transmission of wisdom and values in embodying a form is a change agent in everyday life. Resisting to be a silenced ‘Perempuan joget’ (social dancer in Malay), she brings private acts into public space to examine the judgement of the female body.
