Find out more about how they create works that are compelling to modern audiences while remaining rooted in Chinese Dance.The dialogue will be facilitated by dance practitioner-researcher Elizabeth Chan (Singapore).*Please note that the presentations by the two choreographers will be delivered in Mandarin, with brief summary points in English. English translation will only be provided during the dialogue segment. About the speakers:Mui Cheuk-Yin Originally trained in Chinese classical and ethnic dance, Mui Cheuk-Yin was the lead dancer in numerous dance drama productions of the Hong Kong Dance Company in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s, Mui became an independent artist, choreographing, teaching, performing, and producing dance works in Hong Kong. Mui has created critically acclaimed works that traverse between traditional and contemporary with effortless fluidity. Her works have been featured during the 25th and 35th Anniversaries of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, at the Lyon Biennale de la Danse, the International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Venice and the Dance Biennale Tokyo. In 2000, she was invited by Bausch and the Folkwang Tanzstudio to choreograph Whispering Colour, and to perform as guest artist with Tanztheater Wuppertal in Bausch’s seminal Rite of Spring.  In 2012, Mui was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance.Yang Yuntao Yang graduated from the Minzu University of China’s Faculty of Dance, where he received training in traditional Chinese dance. After which, he joined the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Beijing Modern Dance Company, City Contemporary Dance Company and Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC). At 38, he became the youngest Artistic Director of HKDC. His award-winning choreography for HKDC includes: Spring Ritual·Eulogy, winner of Outstanding Achievement in Production at the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2013 and presented in Beijing and Taipei in 2013; The Legend of Mulan, winner of Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the 2014 Hong Kong Dance Awards and presented in New York, Sydney and London in 2015 and 2017 respectively; Storm Clouds, winner of three awards including Outstanding Achievement in Production at the 2015 Hong Kong Dance Awards; and L’Amour Immortel, winner of three awards at the 2016 Hong Kong Dance Awards, presented in Beijing and Guangzhou in 2017, and in Taipei in 2018.About the facilitator:Elizabeth Chan Elizabeth Chan is a practitioner-researcher in both Chinese and contemporary dance. She has completed a BFA in Dance (Chinese Dance) from the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, and MA in Dance Studies from the University of Roehampton (London).
