They will begin by sharing about their experiences organizing with the LGBT movement in the United States. With a particular attention to the dynamics of (trans)gender, race, and immigration -- Alok will discuss both the critiques of mainstream gay and trans politics and alternatives being generated by trans and gender non-conforming people of color. Then through a series of written, performance, and creative exercises participants will grapple with these theories and questions through writing and art production.The workshop can take up to 30 participants.Alok Vaid-Menon is a trans Indian writer and performance artist based in New York City. Their creative and political work grapples with questions of gender, trauma, diaspora, race, and desire. As 1/2 of the performance collaboration DarKMatter, Alok has been invited to perform and facilitate at universities, conferences, and organizations across the world.
