Reclaiming Our Color from the Rainbow that Stole it From Us: A Workshop with Alok of DarkMatter Poetry

This is a creative arts workshop hosted by non-binary Indian artist Alok.. They will begin by sharing about their experiences organizing with the LGBT movement in the United States. With a particular attention to the dynamics of (trans)gender, race, and immigration -- Alok will discuss both the critiques of mainstream gay and trans politics and alternatives being generated by trans and gender non-conforming people of color. Then through a series of written, performance, and creative exercises participants will grapple with these theories and questions through writing and art production.

The workshop can take up to 30 participants.

Alok Vaid-Menon is a trans Indian writer and performance artist based in New York City. Their creative and political work grapples with questions of gender, trauma, diaspora, race, and desire. As 1/2 of the performance collaboration DarKMatter, Alok has been invited to perform and facilitate at universities, conferences, and organizations across the world. Their work has been published in various outlets like MTV, The Guardian, Buzzfeed, The New York TImes, Upworthy, TEDx and more.
