Join us in this hands-on workshop to learn the techniques of warli painting, the traditional painting style of western Maharashtra, with master craftsman Anil Vangad.Can't attend the workshop? Warli painting demonstrations will be ongoing at the Indian Heritage Centre from 10 am - 5 pm daily from 3 to 7 September, and from 10 am to 3 pm on 8 September.About the CraftWarli is a folk painting style, traditionally practiced in western Maharashtra by the Warli tribe. The paintings are traditionally done on the clay-and-cowdung walls of the the village houses, using white pigment. The paintings are a coming together of sophisticated and native art forms, representing nature, the life cycle, the changing seasons, animism, forest culture and the life of the people in its narrative themes. Human forms, gods and goddesses, animals and insects, the cotton plant and the sun are recurring images, which reflect their environment and cultural practices.About the Artist:Anil Chaitya Vangad hails from a small Warli tribal village in Maharashtra, to the north of Mumbai. He has been painting for the last 19 years in the traditional art style of the Warlis, experimenting with themes of gods and goddesses as well as the more contemporary issues of our times. He still prefers to use the traditional mediums of geru (terracotta), cow dung, charcoal and rice paste without the use of use synthetic dyes and paints in his paintings and encourages his family members to do the same. He is not just passionate about painting but also about farming, which is the traditional occupation of the Warlis. Vangad’s works have been exhibited in The USA as well as Britain and France. Recently in July of 2014, Anil Vangad’s work was introduced to the Santa Fe Folk Art market for the first time and in September 2014 he was awarded the WCC Award of Excellence from UNESCO for his painting bringing Warli art on everyone’s attention.About Kala Sangam:Kala Sangam is a collaborative initiative of the Indian Heritage Centre and the High Commission of India in Singapore to invite traditional craftspeople from India to the Centre, to demonstrate their crafts in promotion of this important aspect of Singapore’s Indian community’s intangible cultural heritage, and to share this rich heritage with Singaporeans.Note from the Organiser:Please ensure you can attend before registering for seats.
