Explore the foundations of abstraction through practical exercises, discussion, and creating works of your own. We will look at contemporary abstract artists as well as some historical examples for background and some inspiration but the focus will be on practical exercises that deal with major elements in abstraction ie: line, form, composition, scale negative space and colour. Working from unique still life setups you will incorporate some of the fundamentals of drawing and painting to help push your perception towards a more abstract approach. You will experiment with different types of lines, gesture and mark making, while considering the role of composition, scale and the picture plane in the creation of dynamic artworks. These specially designed, structured exercises will give you a strong foundation for creating your own abstract works and strategies for finding your own voice within abstraction.
Over the 2 sessions we will consider the importance of line and gesture, the role of negative space in creating form and space, as well as an introduction to using colour as
structure. The exercises will build on each other over the 2 days to help students see how using these strategies while working from observation you can begin developing an abstract language of your own. Through a series of structured exercises you will explore abstract strategies for creating work and generating ideas. Suitable for beginners to more experienced artists.
