Bernice Chauly has always been driven by a desire to tell stories, and employs many creative outlets to do so – she is an author, actor, photographer, poet, lecturer and filmmaker. As a writer, she was most inspired by the death of her father, who was died tragically when Bernice was just four. It’s the subject of her award-winning memoir, Growing Up With Ghosts, essentially her parents’ story of forbidden love. Bernice’s Punjabi father and Chinese mother fought against all odds to marry in the 1960s, and converted to Catholicism in a church in Kelantan.For this trail, Bernice recounts fragments from her book on growing up in Ipoh Old Town. 14 Leech Street was the address of her grandfather’s butcher shop, Ying Woh. The trail takes place along this street (now known as Jalan Bijeh Timah), during wich Bernice will recall stories from the Japanese Occupation, and the 1960's all the way to the 1980's.
