Join a 3.5-hour tour with local guide, Marian. She will pick you up at JR Kamakura Station and take you to a little matcha cafe next to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Yufutei. This tour includes a 2-hour-long Goshuincho making experience with a craft artist, Miwa including matcha tea time. Goshuincho is a book of special seals collected as proof of having visited a temple or shrine. After learning about the tradition and history of the Goshuincho, you will choose, cut, and glue beautiful Japanese washi paper to make your own book. After making your Goshuincho, you will move to the tatami room where you will learn the proper manners for receiving seals at temples and shrines while enjoying matcha tea and wagashi served by the tea master. The tour ends with a visit to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine where you may receive your first Goshuin stamp. *The book can also be used as a diary or scrapbook. She established MDK Translations, Inc. in 2008, a small company that provides business, technical and cultural translations. Marian likes to think of herself as a “Japan concierge,” resolving language and cultural issues, introducing her favorite aspects of the country, and generally helping people enjoy their stay. When not translating or guiding visitors, she often goes hiking in Kamakura, adding a new stamp in her goshuin-cho and searching for beautiful tenugui! About the Instructor - Goshuincho Making: Miwa HayashiGraduate of the Tokyo University of Arts. Former art director at a printing company. She currently holds unique workshops for making hand-made Goshuin seal books at the temples and cafes around Kamakura for more than 600 people total. She also organizes and holds workshops for all ages to make accessories and other crafts.
