But the industry is growing, and we have trailblazers, like local filmmaker Wee Li Lin, who have pursued their passion relentlessly and devoted their time to mentoring young filmmakers.As one of Singapore’s pioneering female filmmakers, Li Lin has crafted a niche for herself in telling heartfelt stories with a comedic touch. Join her in a dialogue about her transition from making shorts to directing feature films.About the SpeakerLi Lin began her filmmaking career with the comedy short film Norman on the Air (1997), for which she clinched a Best Director Award at the Competitive Shorts category of the Singapore International Film Festival. She made her feature debut with Gone Shopping (2007), a witty comedy on Singaporeans’ obsession with shopping. The next year, she set up Bobbing Buoy Films with fellow filmmaker Charles Lim. Her filmography now boasts 10 short films and two feature films as well as several telemovies and commercials. Li Lin’s films have reached a wide international audience, travelling to prestigious festivals such as the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, the Cairo International Film Festival, the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Hawaii International Film Festival. Her feature film Forever (2010) was nominated for a Grand Jury Award at the Guam International Film Festival. In 2011, Li Lin earned an honorary award for her commitment to local filmmaking at the Substation's Singapore Short Film Awards. Li Lin studied Art Semiotics at Brown University and completed a graduate programme in drama writing at NYU-Tisch School of the Arts Asia.
