A warm evening in early 1985. The Cannanes take two guitars, a drum, and some cider and set up a sign outside a hall in Abercrombie Street, Chippendale saying "the Cannanes play 40 of their greatest hits" (or something The Cannanes have never had a manager, never had an agent or signed a recording deal. But they have toured the planet, played concerts in Mexico London, Germany, New York and Tokyo and produced many recordings. Still virtually unknown at home, the world has taken notice. In 1986, Calvin Johnson from the K label in Washington State asked for material to release on K. In 1987 NME UK reviewed their first vinyl release Bored Angry & Jealous E.P. with the headline "SINGLE OF THE YEAR!".The seminal low fi indie album from the band "Love Affair with Nature" was first released by the band on purpley/crimson vinyl with no label name. Picked up by a US label the album became a minor classic with many admirers. The 1990's saw more recordings and fabulous tours of the USA, Japan and Europe. After Kurt Cobain died, strangely his journal revealed the Cannanes listed as a favourite. The Cannanes bounded into the 21st century with collaborations with Explosion Robinson (NYC) and Steward (UK). While numerous musicians came and went, the core of Frances Gibson, Stephen O'Neil and David Nichols (sometimes playing or otherwise providing artwork, advice, encouragement and abuse) remained constant. The Cannanes have been invited guests at the Indietracks Popfest in the UK and the 2008 NYC Pop Fest. In 2008, Converse released a limited edition Cannanes (Chuck Taylor) Gym boot as part of the (Product) Red campaign to raise money for the Global Fund to fight Aids Tuberculosis & Malaria. Magical shows in Mexico in 2008 were a highlight for the band. In 2013, Cannanes' song "Here is the Blade" from the album Caveat Emptor is to be used in a telemovie, "Underground" about to air about Julian Assange's life pre WikiLeaks. A lull in releases ascribed to the shock of facing a new century is now over and in 2013 the Cannanes had a brand new EP "Small Batch" recorded in New York in collaboration with Explosion Robinson for release. Reviews were glowing! In a reminiscent mood, their latest album "Howling at All Hours" (a new work based on the Love Affair With Nature record) was released in 2013 on Chapter Music Melbourne Australia. After an Australian tour, the band is preparing for a US tour in August/Sept 2015 and are engaged in recording a number of projects with the band,Stephen Hermann and Stewart Anderson.
