Screening the Transient is a salon session designed to critically examine the recurrent trend of migration themes embedded in Singapore Cinema and beyond. With socio-political, cultural and geographical alterations creating movements and anxieties in the real world, films are able to act as a respondent and a window of reflection at this state of "destabilization". She will be joining the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at the Nanyang Technological University as a postdoctoral fellow in January 2016. She has been published in Cinema Journal and the Journal of Post Colonial Cultures and Societies, and is now looking to turn her dissertation into a book. Her research interests are in the areas of Chinese Cinema, Transnationalism, Diasporas, and Singapore Cinema. Vladimir TodorovicVladimir Todorovic is an experimental filmmaker, new media artist and an educator. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor at the School of Art, Design and Media, NTU, Singapore. His areas of expertise include experimental and documentary film, and generative art."Fluid Boundaries", an omnibus film co-directed by him, premiered at the Busan International Film Festival's Wide Angle-Documentary Showcase in 2014. His feature length film “Disappearing Landscape” premiered at the 42nd International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2013. His debut feature “Water Hands” premiered at the 40th IFFR 2011. It received a special mention award at Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and Best feature award at the flEXiff 2011, Sydney, Australia. His short film Silica-esc (2010) won Special Mention for the category of Computer Art at the Japan Media Arts Festival.Website: www.tadar.netKirsten TanKirsten Tan is a writer/director with a penchant for visual storytelling and off-beat humor. Singapore’s national broadsheet, The Straits Times has exhorted her as a "director to look out for" and her work has been screened in over 40 film festivals, receiving 10 over international awards including "Best Director" at the Singapore International Film Festival and a "National Prize" at the Kodak Film Awards for outstanding cinematography. Her most recent feature screenplay – Popeye is one of ten international projects selected to participate in Berlinale (Berlin Int'l film fest) Talent’s Script Station 2014. It was also invited to participate in Torino Film Lab’s Framework Programme.Her most recent short film "Dahdi" won the Best Southeast Asian Short Film at the Silver Screen Awards, organised by the 25th Singapore International Film Festival.Website: www.kirstentan.comJolovan WhamJolovan Wham is a social worker and Executive Director of Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics, a NGO concerned about the rights and welfare of migrant workers in Singapore. Jolovan is a founding member of HOME and has helped to spearhead and develop the organisation's current programmes and activities. HOME runs shelters, help lines, legal aid programmes, and conducts research, skills training and capacity building workshops. It is also involved in public campaigns to raise awareness of issues affecting migrant workers and lobbying for change in laws and policies. Jolovan has worked in collaboration with local and regional NGOs in initiating campaigns and advocating for the rights of low wage migrant workers in Singapore.
