Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868)Born in Pesaro, Italy, was the son of a town musician and inspector of slaughterhouses; his mother was a fine singer. The boy quickly acquired ability to play several instruments and to sing. His first popular success as a composer came in 1810, at age 18, when his opera La Cambriale di Matrimonio was produced in Venice. By the age of 21, Rossini had established himself as the idol of the Italian opera public. By the age of 39 Rossini had composed 39 operas and was the most popular opera composer in history, and the wealthiest. Upset at the turmoil of Europe in revolution, he generally retired from composing, apart from works intended for private performance which he dubbed “sins of old age.” A gourmet cook and bon mot, he enjoyed his retirement and entertained lavishly.
