Modern calligraphy has several different styles - copperplate,
spencerian, etc. In this workshop, Enrica will be sharing more about the copperplate style. Each participant will take home a basic kit, comprising 1 holder (right/left), 2 nibs, a jar of ink, a maruman pad, basic stroke, uppercase, lowercase and guide sheets.
Holder
There are many ways to hold a pointed pen. Typically, each writer has his / her own way in holding a
calligraphy pen. In this workshop, Enrica will show you the standard way to hold the pen, but as you progress along with more practice, you may find your preference and style in holding the pen.
Nibs
Some people say that nibs are treasure in calligraphy. There's a wide variant of pen nibs - some of them very hard to find.
There are flexible nibs and non-flexible nibs. Each participant will take home 1 flexi nib
and 1 non-flexi/standard nib to start writing. Cleaning the nib is a must to
help the nib long last.
Basic
Stroke
Basic stroke/ drills are very important to start writing. There
are many kinds of drills needed to start writing modern calligraphy. From all the
basic strokes we can form a letter. Participants must get used to these basic
strokes before start writing all the letters.
Guide
Sheets
Copperplate is known by its slant. The guide sheet will help each calligrapher write in the same slant (copperplate uses mostly 55° for the slant). The guide
sheet is usually placed under the paper that we use to write.
