Some of the tours are led by the architects themselves, what a treat! TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:NTU Learning Hub:(Photo by Hufton and Crow)Yale-NUS College:(Photo by Albert Kim K S)The Cranes:SITE DETAILS:NTU Learning HubArchitect: CPG ConsultantsThe Hive is envisioned
as a showcase for modern methods of learning and teaching, fostering
entrepreneurship, innovation and social awareness. Stemming from NTU’s
‘flipped classroom’ pedagogy, 56 circular smart rooms are without corners,
fronts or backs, breaking the master-servant relationship in traditional
classrooms. These rooms cluster around a central atrium with generous corridor
doubling as informal study areas, encouraging interaction and collaboration. To rationalise the
organic form of the building, modular construction is redefined. The use of
pigmented concrete in structure is a first in Singapore. Key environmental
features include the self-shading architectural form, the fan-less passive
displacement air-conditioning system, low wall-to-window ratio and bare
finishes, achieving Green Mark Platinum. Employing groundbreaking
solutions in sustainability, modular construction and use of materials, this
project is emblematic of ambitions to push the frontiers of learning and
sustainability, taking higher education in Singapore to greater heights.
Yale-NUS College Architect: Forum
Architects Pte Ltd in collaboration
with Pelli Clarke Pelli ArchitectsThe design of Yale-NUS College focuses on
place making for an integrated living-learning liberal arts environment. Drawing
from the traditional courtyard campus typology of Yale University in New Haven
and tropical living in Singapore, Yale-NUS blends the architecture of towers
with the typology of low-rise courtyards. The result is three residential
colleges occupying a panoply of campus low-rise buildings with distinct and
articulated roof-scapes organized around interlocking courtyards and punctuated
by five slender towers of varying heights. Thirty student neighbourhoods are stacked in
the five towers and share a sky garden, a modern interpretation of Yale’s
famous stairway entrance portal. Each residential college is identified by its
own courtyard with a unique landscape design. Inter-mixing of classrooms,
faculty housing, faculty offices, dining halls and student butteries, all deliberately
programmed on the lower floors, create a variegated experience characteristic
of the Yale brand of liberal arts education.
Yale-NUS’s campus green draws from the
‘genius loci’ of the place as defined by cascading undulating topography with
six existing heritage trees. Pleasantly shaded loggia, footpaths, and
courtyards mitigate the twelve metre change of level and allow the water to
drain naturally into an eco-pond via lush bioswales. Lush variegated planting
coupled with covered outdoor social spaces
turn the campus green into a learning arboretum. The CranesArchitects: ONG&ONG Pte Ltd
The
Cranes is a multi-shophouse project with a unifying design concept that
revolves around the idea of community and is inspired by the diverse Joo Chiat
neighbourhood. The client, having lived in Joo Chiat for much of his life,
wanted to create something akin to a neighbourhood within a house that was at
the same time a reinterpretation of a multi-generational family house. While
each apartment is ultimately a self-contained, private space, various communal
spaces are placed strategically throughout The Cranes to encourage spontaneous,
organic interaction. Even the residential units are configured for different
types of residents, allowing varying levels of privacy and social activity,
based on the residents’ personalities. This is a thoughtful re-imagination of
Joo Chiat that portrays the many facets of the neighbourhood with equal parts
nostalgia and re-invention while staying true to the pursuit for human
connection.Sale of tickets will close 4 days before tour date, or until sold out.Tour timing is subject to change. For student attendees, please present a valid Student Pass for verification on the tour day. Please note that AM and PM tours have
