A staple at Archifest, the Architours afford an in-depth look at buildings in our city, with newly curated journeys aimed to inspire visitors as they explore note-worthy architectural projects in Singapore. Some of the tours are led by the architects themselves, what a treat! TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: NTU Pioneer and Crescent Halls: Design School at Singapore Polytechnic: The Golden Ratio House: (A 6-meter long kitchen customised to have standing adults at a lower platform behind the counter interact with sitting children at a higher platform, both enjoying the full expense of the garden while cooking and dining.)SITE DETAILS: NTU Pioneer and Crescent HallsArchitect: RSP Architects Planners & EngineersThe NTU Pioneer & Crescent Halls exemplifies how the employing of sensible architectonic elements and harnessing of the gifts of our natural environment is sensitively integrated into this sustainable built environment. As one harmoniously composed edifice, especially illustrated by the public levels on the 1st and 2nd storeys – the re-imagining of the piano nobile, all our senses are engaged with the sights and sounds of revitalised streams and water bodies meandering through the buildings set amidst lush greenery. The former swampy drain that runs across the site has been transformed into a series of sensitively designed bio-cleansing retention ponds, swales and wetlands that weaved into the development, blurring the boundaries between a nature park, a stream and a building. This unique integration of the “brown, blue and green” mapping encourages the flora and fauna to thrive and bloom, thus providing an urban hamlet and holistic habitat for students, staff, and even public visitors of NTU to rest and rejuvenate.Design School at Singapore PolytechnicArchitect: RSP Architects Planners & EngineersThe new school was envisioned to not only embody an ecologically conscious design but to also play an active role in shaping students’ design thinking, inspiring and sparking off new ideas generation and discourse. The approach was to create a form of “living lab” or a “studio-incubator” that encouraged openness, innovation and experimentation. Hence, an open and transparent learning environment was created through the generous use of glass and open views into the studios. A variety of gallery spaces, studios, outdoor refreshment areas, the rooftop and landscaped plazas also offer different learning environments that students and teachers can utilise creatively. The school is seamlessly connected to neighbouring blocks with a clear circulation network that integrates with the existing fabric of the site. Open pockets of landscape terraces are interspersed, offering green relief and help to link up the various facilities.The Golden Ratio House Architect: Genome Architects From site analysis, the project’s buildable area was discovered to coincidentally have the proportions of the Golden Ratio (the length of the rectangular area was 1.618 times of the breadth). The design intent was to tie proportionally varying areas to functions that serve different needs of the family. With the Golden Ratio as design concept and organization logic for form and space, program and structure, Genome Architects explored an architecture that was organic and relevant. The sub-division of spaces along the ratio spiral created an order that allowed for rooms of different sizes for different needs, in different locations to have different relationships to each other. Genome Architects see an architecture where concept, geometry, structure, space, program and texture makes a coherent whole. They embrace variety of form and geometry as conceptual tools and construction strategies. Structure is designed as space; details are integral to function and both contribute to user experience.
