Her work covers all aspects of science communication and engagement, and she champions creative and innovative ways to change the way we perceive and understand earth science. Shireen was a multimedia journalist in Singapore and a science journalist in Australia. Her 20 years of professional experience spans the depth and breadth of journalism, media relations, science communication, and geohazard crisis communication. Prior to joining the Earth Observatory, she was Editor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Assistant Director of the Office of Public Affairs at the Supreme Court of Singapore. Shireen holds an Honours Degree in Science from the University of Melbourne, Australia.Game FacilitatorKuang Jianhong is the Education Manager at the Earth Observatory of Singapore. His work focuses on promoting awareness of geohazards among Singaporeans through exhibitions and gameplay. Prior to joining the Earth Observatory, he spent almost 9 years at the Science Demonstration Laboratory of the NUS Faculty of Science, where he met two mentors who changed his perception of education. He firmly believes in hands-on, minds-on learning, where science concepts are brought to live through interactive demonstrations and experiments. He hopes to breathe life into geosciences at the Observatory to engage and excite the people with whom he interacts SynopsisPeople and their communities can be incredibly vulnerable to natural disasters. While very little can be done to stop them from happening, we can reduce the degree of death and destruction by bringing science to the people. At the Earth Observatory of Singapore, we believe that information and education are key to saving lives. This talk will take you through the different ways that the Community Engagement Office packages critical information for the public, with the aim of preparing them to live in the safest possible ways with nature’s hazards.
