Safecast is a project emerged shortly after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Simply wanting to know the true radiation measurements, volunteers including high profile professionals pulled their networks and quickly created portable geiger counters that allows radiation datas to be collected extensively and accurately. Very soon, this project spreaded worldwide and became one of the largest open environmental data in human history, a truly remarkable milestone for citizen science.

“What Safecast proves is that all the preparation in the world – all the money in the world – still fails if you don’t have a rapid, agile, resilient system.”JOI ITO
