Ho Kwon Ping,
Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings
Mr. Ho Kwon Ping may be known and respected as the Executive Chairman of the Banyan Tree Holdings (which owns over 35 hotels and resorts, spas, residential homes, retail galleries, and golf courses), but even his career and entrepreneurial story is a revolutionary one.
He was born in the post-war era, educated in Tunghai University of Taiwan, the University of Singapore, and Stanford University — from which he was kicked out for his fervent student activism against the Vietnam War.
He would later become a broadcast and financial journalist, and the Economics Editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review. His journalistic career made a controversial (and revolutionary) turn after writing an article on PAP in the 1970’s — and getting imprisoned as a result.
In the 1990s, he built Asia’s first integrated resort (Laguna Phuket) by rehabilitating an abandoned tin mine, which would pave the way for his most successful endeavour in hospitality in the last 20 years: Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Ho Kwon Ping has had several awards and accolades to his name, such as the following to name a few: The London Business School 2005 Entrepreneuship Award, CEO of the Year by the Singapore Corporate Awards, the ACA Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his creativity and innovation, was voted Top Thinker in Singapore in the Yahoo! Singapore 9 awards for his business innovations and leadership in civic causes. He was awarded the Singapore Government’s Meritorious Service Medal for contributing to the country’s national progress by founding Singapore Management University.
Mr. Ho Kwon Ping's story is indeed a successful one, but more significantly shaped by lots of out-of-the-box thinking, questioning the status quo, shaking things up a bit, and a passion for innovation and national progress.
Join us this month to hear his take on this month's theme : Revolution.
