Presented by Sombra Projects, The Golden Leaf, an exhibition exploring contemporary & historical issues in Myanmar.
From cultural exoticism to political and social events that send ripples around the world, Myanmar evokes both wonder and concern. Through documentary photography and academic research, The Golden Leaf looks at alternative and lesser-heard stories about the country.
Three main works trace the history of Myanmar from the 1930s to the present day. In Katha: in the steps of George Orwell in Burma, photojournalist Julio Etchart revisits and documents the locations in Orwell's novel Burmese Days. Burmese Days is a critique of colonialism set in the waning days of the Raj.
In Historical Sketches from 1950s Myanmar, Dr. Li Yi uses archival materials to depict a war-torn Yangon that experienced a brief economic and cultural revival after independence.
Surface Tension sees photographer Tom White turning his lens to the contemporary everyday life of the Burmese. Unlike stereotypical images that portray the Burmese culture as exotic and romantic, he focuses on everyday routines, revealing personal struggles and emotions in a social drama that cuts across political and national borders.
