A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval emerged from Cuba to become a 10-time Grammy Award winner and six-time Billboard Award winner.

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval emerged from Cuba to become a 10-time Grammy Award winner and six-time Billboard Award winner. New listeners and familiar fans of this trumpeter, pianist and composer can get a deeper understanding of his musical ideas and the various styles of Latin music that feature in Sandoval’s recordings at this talk.


As a prelude to Mosaic Music Series: Arturo Sandoval on 27 August 2014, come to this talk and listening party, and discover what makes Mr. Sandoval a great force in music. New and familiar listeners will come away with a better undertanding of his musical ideas and the various styles of Latin music by listening to excerpts from Mr. Sandoval's recordings.

About the speaker

Known for his dedication to music education, Ramu Thiruyanam is considered by many to be one of the top up-and-coming young percussion specialists and is a sought-after performer/clinician throughout Asia.

A scholarship recipient of both the National Arts Council and Berklee, he has won numerous awards both locally and internationally, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Education, Performance (with a specialisation in Latin Jazz and Orchestral Percussion) and a minor in Child Psychology. He has had many successful concerts both as a soloist and as a supporting percussionist in countries such as Indonesia, Taiwan, Australia, Europe and the USA and worked with many international artists and orchestras.

A full time music faculty member at School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) and a Vic Firth Education artiste, he currently engages himself in creative musical projects and conducts clinics throughout the year.
