From translating novels to translating plays, and even adapting the 18th century Chinese classic novel Dream of the Red Chamber《红楼梦》(Hong Lou Meng) for the stage, Jeremy Tiang has done it all!


But how is translating plays different from – or similar to – translating novels? How does writing in the different genres – fiction, drama, literary translation – help the craft of translation? How did the award-winning writer/playwright/translator get his break and how has he shaped his career thus far? Furthermore, being a founding member of the translators collective Cedilla & Co, based in the US, how does he see his role as an active member in the literary community?


We sit down with Jeremy for an informal tête-à-tête to find out about all these and more, and also to answer all your burning questions.

Jeremy Tiang has translated more than ten books from Chinese, including novels by Yeng Pway Ngon, You Jin, Zhang Yueran and Chan Ho-Kei. He has been awarded translation fellowships from the Henry Luce Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and PEN America. He also writes and translates plays, including Han Lao Da's Floathouse 1001 and Quah Sy Ren's Dragon Bone, which were performed at The Arts House. Jeremy is the author of It Never Rains on National Day (Epigram Books; shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize) and State of Emergency (finalist for the Epigram Books Fiction Prize), and he won the Golden Point Award in 2009.


ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Tina Sim has been a writer and sub-editor for a government body, a mainstream daily and a woman’s magazine. She currently writes for an academic institution: commentaries, blogs, social media, even greeting cards. Her articles have been published in regional and local newspapers. Her translations have been published by Words Without Borders, Maths Paper Press, Singapore Press Holdings, NUS Singapore Business School and Nanyang Business School. She has also translated surtitles for Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive: A|S|I|A (forthcoming translation of the play “Orphan of the House of Zhao”) and subtitles for Singapore Minstrel, a kaleidoscopic fantasy-documentary by local film-maker, Xi Jie Ng. She is a graduate of The Select Centre's Translators' Lab 2015.
